UCL Divestment Flashmob

After victory for students campaigning for divestment from fossil fuels at Kings College London, the Fossil Free UCL campaign has accelerated and they are promising daily direct actions at the campus to force the Chair of the Council, Dame Julius (who was on the board of BP for ten years) to divest the university’s £12.5million oil investments.

This action took place on 14th March in the Quad at UCL and comprises a flashmob, dancing to the music of Afriquoi, who kindly gave permission for use in this video, as well as speeches and some samba from members of Sambatage.

Other events have included smearing ketchup and molasses (to signify blood and oil) at the Provost’s office, as well as occupying the balcony of his office and writing quotes from UCL’s own climate research on his windows.

After four years of gentle campaigning, and with the backing of more than 3,200 students on a petition, the ‘Fossil Free UCL’ campaigners are hoping to achieve significant results through relentless direct action.
